The starting point
Choose outdoor lighting by the documented protection rating of the exact model and the manufacturer’s operating conditions. Check the complete installed arrangement, including connectors, unused sockets and cable routing. The word ‘waterproof’ alone is not enough information to select a fixture.
Read both digits
An IP code describes enclosure protection under defined tests. Its first digit concerns solid objects and dust; the second concerns water. IP65 and IP66 both use 6 for dust protection, while their water tests differ: IP65 addresses water jets and IP66 more powerful jets. This is a defined protection classification, rather than a promise that equipment can be exposed to every environment.
For an enquiry, record the actual code, its supporting documentation and the precise model or variant it applies to. Keep that information with the quotation so an indoor and outdoor version cannot be confused.
Describe the exposure, not just the event
Tell the supplier where each fixture will sit, its mounting orientation, whether it has shelter and how long it will remain installed. Include expected temperature, dust, spray and any coastal exposure. Ask for the permitted conditions in the model’s instructions.
Do not use an ingress rating to infer resistance to corrosion, suitability for immersion, or approval for permanent installation. If those conditions are relevant, request explicit documentation for them. A fixture can need a different assessment from its power and data connections.
Review the complete connection arrangement
- Identify the exact power and data connector families, mating plugs and required socket caps.
- Ask how the stated protection is maintained when connected and when a socket is unused.
- Check mounting instructions, cable routing and access for inspection or service.
- Have a competent person assess the electrical distribution and protection for the actual site.
- Include transport, drying, storage and inspection instructions in the crew handover.
Keep model evidence with the order
A useful outdoor-lighting brief includes fixture quantities, working distances, installation drawings, event duration, location and expected exposure. Request a current manual and the supporting protection documentation for the exact supplied variant.
If the product name, parameter table and manual disagree, resolve the difference before approval. Photographs of a fixture in rain do not establish its tested rating. Record the accepted model, connectors and included accessories in the final equipment list.
Common questions
Does IP66 mean the fixture may be submerged?
Do not infer immersion suitability from IP66. Confirm any required immersion condition separately against the exact model’s rating and instructions.
What information should accompany an outdoor-lighting quotation request?
