450 BSW IP guide: film effects, beam data and outdoor checks

Moving head selection

What the 450 BSW IP film shows, how to read its beam data from 5 m to 100 m, and what to check before using this IP66 moving head outdoors.

Still from the product film. The water scene is a demonstration, not a protection test.

The 450 BSW IP is a YL Light outdoor moving head that combines beam, spot and wash functions in an IP66 magnesium-alloy housing. It has a Philips MSD Silver 420W/2 LL lamp, 600W total rated power, a 2°-31° beam angle, linear CMY and CTO, two colour wheels and two gobo wheels. It is aimed at fleets that want one fixture for aerial beams, projected gobos and colour looks on outdoor and indoor jobs.

This guide matches the effects in the product film to the published specifications, explains the beam data and channel modes, and lists what to check before an outdoor job. We prepared it from the product page, manual and photometric chart.

What the product film shows

The film demonstrates functions. It is not a measurement or a certification test. This table matches each scene to the specification behind it.

Beam output by distance

These figures come from the Beam Mode chart on the product page. Spot diameter is in metres.

Distance1.95° lux1.95° spot22° lux22° spot
5 m1,764,0000.1722,0002.02
10 m441,0000.345,5004.04
20 m110,2500.681,3758.08
40 m27,5631.3634416
60 m12,2502.0415324
80 m6,8912.728632
100 m4,4103.45540

Zoom position changes the result far more than a single headline number suggests. At 40 m, moving from 22° to 1.95° raises the chart value about 80 times, while the spot shrinks from 16 m to 1.36 m.

Each column falls with the square of the distance, so read the table as a projection from a reference reading, not as seven separate site measurements. The chart does not state the colour setting or test method. If your design depends on a particular throw, ask for a test at that distance. Our guide to reading photometric data explains what to keep beside each number.

28CH or 20CH: choose before you patch

The manual gives a separate chart for each mode. The 28CH chart includes both gobo wheels and both prisms. The 20CH chart keeps pan, tilt, CMY, CTO, colour wheels, strobe, dimmer, frost, zoom, focus and diffusion, but it lists no gobo or prism channels. If your cues use gobos or prisms, patch the fixture in 28CH.

The manual's address examples for the first four fixtures are:

ModeFixture 1Fixture 2Fixture 3Fixture 4
28CH001029057085
20CH001021041061

The channel order also changes. The 28CH chart starts with colour and the 20CH chart starts with pan and tilt, so one mode's profile will not work for the other. Lamp on, lamp off and reset commands are on the last channel of each mode, and the value must be held for at least 3 seconds.

The product page has the manual and console files for grandMA2 and Avolites Titan.

Where it fits, and where it may not

The 450 BSW IP makes most sense when one rig has to cover different jobs: narrow aerial effects in one cue, gobo projection in the next, and colour on stage or set pieces after that. Having both CMY mixing and two colour wheels gives a designer two ways to build colour.

Check these points before choosing it:

  • Camera work: the stated CRI is above 70 and the base colour temperature is 7800K. Test skin tones and scenery with your own camera.
  • Large washes: the listed beam angle stops at 31°. A dedicated wash fixture may cover a wide area better at short throw.
  • Network control: the listed protocols are DMX512 and RDM. Art-Net or sACN would need a compatible gateway.
  • Handling: each fixture weighs 27 kg, so plan the structure and crew around that load.
  • Lamp planning: the stated lamp life is 3,500 hours, so include replacement lamps in your service plan.

Outdoor use: read IP66 with the connections

The rain scene in the film shows the fixtures running with power and data cables attached, but a video does not prove a rating. Ask for the protection documents for the version you are buying.

The published connections are waterproof power in and out, and waterproof 3-pin and 5-pin DMX in and out. The published operating range is -10°C to 40°C. IP66 does not mean the fixture can be submerged, and it does not cover every installation. Our outdoor IP rating guide lists what to check on site.

Details your crew will notice

The film shows pan and tilt locks and an integrated folding hook on the base. The 2.8-inch display flips automatically, which helps when a fixture is hung upside down. In the film, the screen shows DMX status and a temperature reading, with four touch keys beside it.

The specification sheet also lists temperature-monitored variable-speed fans and software upgrades through the DMX data cable.

What to send for a quotation

Send the quantity, destination, indoor or outdoor conditions, throw distance, mounting method and console, and tell us if you need flight cases or your own branding. You can send your project details here or browse other beam spot wash moving heads.

01Is the lamp 450W?

No. The 450 in the model name is not the lamp wattage. The lamp is a Philips MSD Silver 420W/2 LL, and 600W is the total rated power of the fixture.

02How many DMX channels does the 450 BSW IP use?

It has 28CH and 20CH modes. Use 28CH when you need gobos and prisms, because the published 20CH chart does not list them.

03Which console files are available?

The product page lists grandMA2 and Avolites Titan files. For another console, build a profile from the channel charts in the manual or ask us.

04Can the 450 BSW IP stay outdoors permanently?

IP66 alone does not answer that. Tell us the location, exposure and installation period, and confirm the permitted conditions in the manual.

05Can it replace a dedicated wash fixture?

It can soften and colour light with its frost, homogenizer lens and CMY system, but its listed beam angle stops at 31°. Compare the coverage you need at your throw distance.
